MEP David Casa has been appointed rapporteur on an opinion with the aim of reinforcing economic policy coordination and improving the economic governance and stability framework of the Union, in particular in the euro area.
The report will propose short-term measures with the aim of modifying the mechanisms of economic policy coordination in the EU. Such policies have demonstrated weaknesses in part due to failures to comply with the rules necessary for the correct functioning of the Economic and Monetary Union.
"The surveillance procedures that are currently in existence are not sufficiently comprehensive - it vital that the EU commences to make better use of instruments of surveillance that are available under the Treaty," stated Mr Casa.
"I am pleased to have been entrusted with this opinion and must thank my colleagues within the EPP."
The conclusions of the Casa opinion will establish the position of the Committee of Employment and Social Affairs on this report and will subsequently be incorporated into the main dossier.
