Casa Report on VAT Fraud Approved

Casa Report on VAT Fraud Approved

The Casa Report received a resounding vote of approval when presented before MEPs at the European Parliament. The Report concerns combating VAT fraud through the introduction of a mechanism that will make certain kinds of fraud theoretically impossible.

Mr Casa amended the Commission proposal in order to ensure that there would be no additional burdens placed on the business sector. He also increased the possibility that the mechanism would be applied to the trading of emissions certificates, as this sector is thought to be extremely vulnerable.

The Members of the Committee of Economic and Monetary Affairs were asked to vote on the text put forward by Mr Casa. From a total of 44 MEPs, 43 voted in favour and 1 abstained. Now that the Report has been approved by the responsible Committee the last test will be the vote in plenary that is scheduled for the end of next month.

"I am extremely happy that we have been so successful with this Report. Carousel fraud is an extremely complex and sophisticated form of fraud that is conducted by professional criminals. These activities negatively impact Member States' revenues and hinder the proper functioning of the Internal Market. We must do all that is possible to significantly reduce these criminal activities ", stated MEP David Casa.
